For the last couple of years (since swine flu) I’ve visualised the ending of the non-science of global warming as being the same kind of growing lack of interest that appeared at the end of swine flu, and that appears after most media scares.
But I’m increasing worried by this analysis. I know civil servants and public officials will never declare an end (voluntarily) and so they will go for the head in the sand approach hoping it will go away.
But this isn’t like any other scare. Many governments have created explicit legislation which has set their economies on what can only be described as economic suicide, particularly if they are the only ones increasing their costs this way … put it this way, would you buy from a manufacturer who had to increase costs 5% due to massive price hikes to pay for “green” electricity or would you buy from one in a country where the price is 5% lower. Even a few percent can have a disproportionately high effect on sales and economic performance.
OK, it takes time for manufacturers in lower cost countries to gear up to supply, so the change is slow, but it is inevitable, as is the backlash from companies being affected, as is the drop in government revenue, as is the consumer backlash as jobs are being lost and politicians failing to do anything about it.
So, can they carry on with “business as usual” and hope the global warming scam gets forgotten. I can’t see how it can. Governments can’t get out of this without explicitly changing the law. They can’t change the law without explicitly admitting the non-science of global warming.
And … they can’t admit the non-science without either looking extremely gullible …. or, and this is most likely, FINDING SOMEONE TO BLAME.
Perhaps, if there is a new political party, it can blame the old parties and get away with it. But in the UK, where we have a pretty well stable 3 & 4 party politics, that doesn’t appear an option.
Blame the past politicians? Possibly … the older generation were corrupt … but I think not.
So, it seems that the only way politicians can come out of this with their heads held high … is to find a scapegoat, and it needs to be a pretty big, pretty ugly scape goat to take the blame for such a massive .
In other words, I think we are talking a major corruption trial with dozens of people serving 10s of years. I think we are talking hundred of police sifting through every last email and 100s of millions putting a case together that ensures some people get the public blame … allowing the politicians to change the law without themselves taken the blame.

    I predict it will fizzle but for our (UK etc) economic survival we need a bang.
    We need a bang to
    Get rid of the legislation (as you point out).
    Shut the book on AGW so that it doesn’t contniue to pop up in research unless justified.
    Put a long needed spotlight on the sinister influences of Greenpeace, WWF, etc. Strip their charitable status and kick them out of lobbying.
    Break the BBC.
    Open our pampered eyes to the incredible chances we’ve been given through fossil fuels and industry.
    Stop seeing scientists as super intelligent beings. At the moment we put too much faith in their opinion and feel too uneducated to join them. Science needs more pragmatists.
    Show how silly it is to listen to celebs who are famous for their pretty bodies and not their brains.
    Claw back some of the cash from those who have used global fears to line their own pokets.
    Start seeing industry as an essential partner and not an unecessary evil.
    Break the BBC (well it deserves mentioning twice). I’d say break the Guardian too but I don’t think it will survive that long.

    It really depends how much momentum this thing has. It’s like stopping something rolling down a hill … when its hardly moving, it is relatively each to put a few chocks in place, but as soon as it picks up speed, it’ll just roll over any obstacle.
    But then again, we shouldn’t underestimate the brass neck of our politicians. They have skins of leather and are quite capable of just turning round one day and … like they did with the solar subsidies … just stopping it in its track.
    But this is not just stopping a scheme, it is now a legal requirement to act. Of course they could just ignore the law – or do it half-heartedly and hope no one notices (which is what I’m sure they will try to do), but I think they’ve created a monster which is far too big, both in terms of the number of people who need this monster to keep devouring our economy and also in the size and damage and shear enormity of resources this monster needs.
    I suppose literally a white elephant … an animal so huge it cannot just be stabled quietly away.

    I predict a bang when the next big El Nino arrives – possibly next year – and we have a hotter year than 1998. Once the ‘warming has stopped’ mantra is silenced climate denial will melt away like snow off a dyke.

    Politicians rarely reverse course. It is more likely that the legislation will stay but “help” will be given to struggling businesses. We already see this with Cap & Trade. Arguably the bail out of GM shows again that on the one hand politicians enact legislation that harms car makers and on the other happily prop them up. The same is true of the effect on people – politicians will subsidise fuel bills even though there has to be fuel poverty to discourage consumption

    G’day Scotty! Did you hear that 600 people are dead from freezing in central Europe?! Remember when I was telling you: less ice on Arctic’s waters = colder and more ice in Europe / USA > no moisture left to replenish the ice on the Arctic? Remember when I was saying: ”those big ice crusher ships cost lots of dollars and rubles to build and maintenance… they are not there to make 100m corridor only. When they slice the ice on many places – the exposed ruff water damages 1000 times more ice. You were ridiculing me -”made you laughing”… Soon after – an nuclear ice crusher ship was taking spectators direct to the north poll, every second week.
    Because the ice moves clockwise – that ship had to make new corridor every time going to the poll. Slicing as slices from a cake – exposed ruff water did lots more damages to the ice. Under the Warmist theology is: ice is white, reflects the sunlight – less ice, hopefully a small GLOBAL warming, to get them out of trouble. The truth: for 6 months is no sunlight to reflect, but water without ice as insulator absorbs more coldness Together with the normal coldness from the air combined – with double strength via Siberia the winds brought that extra coldness to central Europe = extra coldness and much more snow there. Which means: no moisture is going to Arctic, to renew the ice deficit – for last 3-4 years the chain reaction started – even less and less ice on Arctic, but much more ice south. Now was in Central Europe.. next January / February… Scotland is closer to Arctic than central Europe. Scotty, I’m never wrong; I use the laws of physics.
    At that time, I warned you, you are in the northern hemisphere – to guide the people like the Northern Star… instead, you turned out as a very, very distant star… NOT VERY BRIGHT…
    You could have alerted the people – to make the offenders demolishing / vandalizing the ice – to minimize damages. .     On colder area the air shrinks – to accommodate the extra volume of air from the part that is warmer than normal. Otherwise, if one part, or the whole troposphere gets warmer – extra volume of air goes UPWARDS – there the temp is minus – 90C > EQUALIZES IN A JIFFY. Proven why.
